In 1896 Harry W Smith was responsible for transforming much of Scarborough
Harry W Smith development of Peasholm captures his outstanding ability and his creativity.
Many considered his plans lavish and unnecessary and dubbed it ‘the borough engineer's baby'. His vision for Peasholm was to excavate the swamp around Peasholm Beck and transform the stream into a lake.
Around the lake, he would lay paths and flower beds and build a boathouse, café and a bridge in the Japanese style; the whole effect would be a willow pattern.
With its scenic lake, pretty gardens and fun activities, Peasholm Park is one of the most impressive of Scarborough’s central parks.
It covers an area of 40 acres (16 hectares) with views of the North Sea. Stroll around the circumference of the lake, which runs around a picturesque island.
